July 8 - 14, 2002, US Virgin Islands - Caneel Bay Resort

Caneel Bay

Caneel Bay is an exciting, exclusive resort nestled on the remote island of St. John, in the heart of the United States Virgin Islands. Here, you'll explore seven beautiful beaches or dive into the turquoise waters of the Caribbean, perfect for swimming, sailing and snorkeling. Founded by Laurance Rockefeller in 1955, Caneel Bay has seven secluded beaches which border an expansive paradise of 170 lush acres. In this pristine setting, comfortably elegant resort accommodations showcase beautiful vistas of ocean or gardens, yet the structures -- artfully built in the landscape -- are barely in view. Caneel Bay remains purposefully absent of modern glitz as well as digital and electronic distractions (no TVs or telephones in the rooms) -- it's a place where a wake-up knock replaces a wake-up call and the furious pace of the world at home becomes a remote memory.

At left, happy couple above the Caneel Bay Terrace just before sunset. Sumptuous lunch buffets are available at the Terrace. This open-air dining room located just a few steps from the Caneel Bay shoreline, is also a popular spot for the weekly Grand Buffet - which we had. All meals feature the finest cuisine prepared with health and fitness in mind.

It was very hot, and dry, but the bougainvillea love it.

Equator Restaurant. Every evening is celebrated with passionate flair. Within the dramatic stone and coral ruins of this enchanted 18th-century sugar mill, we enjoyed an intriguing menu of eclectic cuisine while a glorious sun sets over the water. This restaurant overlooks all of Caneel Bay with the dramatic lights of St. Thomas in the distance. Its specialty menu features fresh seafood and quality meats prepared with classic and Caribbean flair.

This wild donkey is one of many frequenting the resort every afternoon. Though appearing harmless, we were reminded that they are wild and not to approach.

Sun sets behind St Thomas - from the Terrace restaurant.

Sunset from Caneel Bay pier. The resort provides a complimentary greeting and boat ride to this pier from the St Thomas airport.

Honeymoon Beach.

Caneel Bay Beach. This beach is just steps from some rooms. Snorkeling is great in very shallow water here.
