July 5, 1999 - Grand Canyon, Kaibab Trail

Martin Dies, Jr.

This repeat trip to the Grand Canyon was part of my 40th birthdate present, given by Calvin, which included DoubleTree Sedona Resort. We were here in early April but were unable to hike down the canyon due to an unexpected, late-season snowstorm that impacted south to Phoenix. July probably isn't the best time to do this hike either - but, we are here -- so. Our plan was to dayhike part of the South Kaibab Trail to Cedar Ridge - 3 miles roundtrip.

View from the rim at Yaki Point.

Debra 100' down and still "antimated".

This posing won't last much longer.

The muletrain carrying supplies passes us on their way out of the canyon.

Stretch break.

After spending the night on the canyon floor at Phantom Ranch, the mules and guests meet us several hundred feet below the rim.

We are really getting hot now. No shade. Toes crunched down in boots after a couple of hours of descent.

These "greenhorns" didn't look to good after several hours in the saddle. (The only thing worst would be walking).

Debra finds shelter as we let the mules pass.

After switchbacking all morning, the mules are near the top (see mid-picture).

We made it out alive (some others didn't this same day). Cleaned up, and decided to shuttle to all of the stops and take in the views.

Last stop on West Rim Drive - Hermits Rest.
